Are You Sure It’s An Orphan?

Before you rescue the wildlife baby you’ve found, make sure that it’s actually an orphan first! Often, mom will spend the day hunting for food, and leave her babies safe in their den.

Other times, you may have found the baby in the middle of a move.  Raccoon moms have several dens prepared for her babies, and often move them to throw off predators.

Other mom’s will move their babies if they feel the den/nest is no longer safe.

Some mom’s, such a deer and rabbits, only feed their babies in the morning, and at night, and spend their day off hunting for food.

Just because they are alone, doesn’t mean they are an orphan.

Some tips to tell if the baby is actually an orphan

  1. It is wounded
  2. It’s lethargic and dehydrated
  3. It is having difficulty breathing
  4. It’s covered in bugs/ticks/maggots/ect
