KMR is my go to formula when it comes to feeding wildlife babies.
The powder easily dissolves into water, and is easily digested by babies.
It has the closest nutritional value to their actual diet in most cases.
I have been experimenting with another brand this year for skunks and squirrels.
Fox Valley makes a specific brand just for those babies, and the nutritional value is specific to their diet.
However, I’ve successfully raised skunks and squirrels on KMR for a number of years.
Cow’s milk and online wildlife recipes should be avoided at all cost!
Cow’s milk is often fatal, and online recipes can lack the nutritional value causing severe digestive upset, bone disease or organ damage.
I also avoid goats milk.
When a baby is found, I recommend not feeding it at all.
Put in a box/carrier/crate and set it on a heating pad on low.
Contact a rehabber.
Babies are often dehydrated, and can’t digest formula until they’re rehydrated.
Some babies are so dehydrated, that they can’t absorb the electrolytes given orally, and have to be given IV or SubQ fluids.
Aspiration can also be a problem.
Rehabbers are prepared for this.
